A Quick Overview and History of the Chronograph Watch

Do you know the difference between a normal watch and a chronograph watch? The actual watch face of a chronograph watch is much more complicated, and therefore more craftsmanship is required when manufacturing them. The intricacy of the watch is due to its differences when measuring time.

When you look at a normal watch face or dial, you would expect to see numbers with hands pointed at them, showing the passage of hours in the day. However, chronographs are much more complicated, mainly for the purposes of accuracy. The chronograph has subdials, so to speak, imbedded in the face of the normal-looking watch. Each chronograph is different: some have two, three, or four subdials. They are most likely to be situated next to the 3, 6, and 9 numbers on the normal face, and each different dial provides you with a different function. Often, these functions will be accurate seconds and minutes, proving the chronograph to be an ideal stop watch.

The chronograph watch dates back to the early nineteenth century. In the 1820s, a Frenchman called Rieussec invented the timepiece for this exact reason: an accurate and precise way to measure shorts bursts of time. The design was patented, but it was almost 100 years later that the design was adapted to be worn on a strap on the wrist. And it was only in 1990 that the watch company ‘Swatch’ adapted the face for fashion reasons, and made it affordable for the general public. But there is more to the history of the chronograph than that.

At the turn of the twentieth century, chronographs were most commonly used in sporting events, mainly for their professional accuracy. To this day, stopwatches are associated with sports. They were also widely used in the military, in training and in operation. However, soldiers carrying out exercises at night needed to be able to see the dials in the dark. So, radium (a glow-in-the-dark substance) was painted on to the numbers and hands to illuminate the clock face.

As well as the functions listed above, there are chronograph watches available which measure more complex things. Along with seconds and minutes, hours might be recorded, along with days, months, and even cycles of the moon. Chronographs have also been adapted for people in numerous professions: doctors use ones which measure pulses; for couriers, a tachometer; and for those working at sea, a slide rule bezel to help calculate and navigate the oceans.

Chronographs are available in analogue format, as above. However, there are also digital chronogrpah watches available. If digital, the chronograph watch can either have multiple displays, or the same display with different functions.

If you’re considering buying a chronograph timepiece, rest assured that it is a wise decision. Stopwatches are useful, everyday contraptions. Not only can they tell you if you’re running late, they can help you boil your eggs for lunch! Chronograph watches are practical, classic, and fashionable timepieces that will be loved for years to come.
