About Digital Watches for Men - A Short History of the Digital Watch
The invention of the wristwatch was among one of the most important advents of all time. A timepiece worn on the wrist using a strap or bracelet enables the wearer to have constant access to time, ensuring punctuality in all situations. In the past fifty years, the watch has gone through a major advancement process, from mechanical, to electronic, to digital. Traditionally, a watch face used to show the time in analogue form. This meant that the dial was numbered, and time was indicated by the rotation of two different sized hands indicating the passing of seconds, minutes, and hours. However, analogue watches were not 100 percent accurate, and often needed to be reset or wound.
The digital watch was the perfect solution. It was, essentially, a small and simple computer; an LED screen which showed a simplified version of the time. More often than not, the display on a digital watch shows the time in twenty-four hour format, rather than the traditional clock face of the analogue types. For example, rather than having both hands pointing to the number twelve, the digital version would blink 12.00. As it was computerised, it made timekeeping much more accurate. The seconds, which were sometimes slow on analogue varieties, were displayed in digital format much more precisely.
The first digital timepiece was in fact inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. In 1970, a prototype was made, and finally the end product was sold in 1972 for over $2000. Obviously, this was not particularly successful or suitable for mass production. Initially, the digital watch was a product too luxurious to the ordinary customer, a fact which was soon rectified. In 1975, the computer part of the watch was put into a plastic case and sold for $20, making it an overnight must-have item. However, the LED screen used up a large amount of power from the power source. Digital watch owners had to press a button if they wanted to see the time, as a continuous display would have run the battery down. Within a few years, LED displays were replaces by liquid crystal displays, which had the ability to continuously show the time, and used much less battery power.
