Before the wristwatch was fashioned just after World War 1, most people kept time using pocket watches. Pocket watches were first developed in the 16th Century, but the original design was much bigger than the styles you will be accustomed to seeing these days. Early watches were much larger, and often had to be worn around the neck. It was around one hundred years later that the technology developed, and smaller pocket watches began to be mass produced. Open-face watches (as the name suggests) tend to come without the cover. At the top of the dial is a winding stem, but in both of the above styles, the dial for the sub-seconds can always be found at the 6 o' clock position.
