About Pocket Watches for Men
Before the wristwatch was fashioned just after World War 1, most people kept time using pocket watches. Pocket watches were first developed in the 16th Century, but the original design was much bigger than the styles you will be accustomed to seeing these days. Early watches were much larger, and often had to be worn around the neck. It was around one hundred years later that the technology developed, and smaller pocket watches began to be mass produced. The earlier models originally only had an hour hand. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the minute hand was introduced to the design.
Pocket watches usually come with a cover to protect the glass or watch face, and a short chain. The chain can be attached to a belt loop, a button hole, lapel, or equivalent to hold the watch in place while it is in the pocket, and to prevent it from getting lost. But there are many different kinds of watch. This particular kind, with the cover, is known as a hunter-case watch, due to it being enclosed. Open-face watches (as the name suggests) tend to come without the cover. At the top of the dial is a winding stem, but in both of the above styles, the dial for the sub-seconds can always be found at the 6 o' clock position.
The pocket watch was a traditional accessory, beautiful and personal to the wearer. They were the type of ornament that would have been passed down from generation to generation; grandfather, to father, to son. Many pocket watches that exist today are expensive antiques with a rich history. Up until the turn of the 20th Century, pocket watches were the popular choice. Wrist watches were available, but were often considered ladylike. It was only because of their popularity during the First World War that people realised how convenient the wrist watch actually was. Due to being superseded by wrist watches, the popularity of pocket watches has declined in the past 100 years. Yet, as with all fashions, there has been a resurgence of all things considered 'retro'. In the 1970s and 1980s, 3-piece suits became fashionable, and with it came a reproduction of the pocket watch. Ever since, a couple of watch companies have begun to produce pocket watches, with brands such as Rotary, Sekonda, Mount Royal and Jean Pierre making some wonderful, classic pocket watches.
Pocket watches are a wonderful, classic gift idea, and can be a joy to own. Although pocket watches are traditionally given as retirement gifts, they also make an excellent, original gift for groomsmen and ushers in weddings for example. If you're considering purchasing a pocket watch, have a think about what type will be most beneficial, and most loved. They come in a variety of styles and prices. There are now many great new pocket watches available, all in traditional and old fashioned styles, and some even made with mechanical movements. And you can be sure that if you purchase such a classic-looking pocket watch, it will no doubt be passed down your family for generations to come.
